Women's Department

The Women’s Department of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc., formerly the Women’s Auxiliary, was organized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1962. The purpose of the Department is to unite all women in Progressive Baptist Churches into a fellowship that promotes the spiritual growth of women and commitment to the mission of church through evangelism, missions, Christian Education and stewardship.

The total membership of the Women’s Department is divided into “UNITS.” This structure has one specific purpose, i.e., to involve every Progressive Woman as a participating member by becoming active in the “ UNIT’ of her choice. Units give ample avenues through which to channel talents and interests. Work in the Women’s Department is carried on by the Units serving throughout the year on the National, Regional, State, District, and Local level.

The structure of the Parent Body includes Regional Fellowships (churches located in the same geographical area) that provide a wider fellowship, leadership training, and an opportunity for united service and action. A Women’s Department is found in the five Regional Fellowships: Eastern, International, Midwest, Southern, and Southwest.

Progressive Baptist women hold membership in other ecumenical fellowships that include the North American Baptist Women’s Union, Baptist World Alliance, Church Women United, National Council of Churches and World Council of Churches.

The development of every woman in every Progressive Baptist Church is of vital importance to carry out the legacy of the Department. The projects and special projects are implemented for the admonition given by the first President of the Department, Dr. Uvee Mdodana Arbouin:

Bite off more than you can chew --- then chew it!
Plan for more than you can do --- then do it!
Arrange more time than you can spare---then spare it!
Take on more than you can bear---then bear it!”
