PNBC Conducts Successful Advocacy Day in Washington, DC.

On April 16 and 17, delegates from Progressive National Baptist Convention under the leadership of President Dr. James C. Perkins convened in Washington, DC to oppose policies that hurt the poor. The most recent Executive Order calls to tighten further restrictions on safety net programs that will harm the poor and make between 5 million and 7 million recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp program) subject to stricter work requirements. The recommended cuts suggested in the Farm Bill will decrease funding to SNAP that supply food to children, the elderly, the disabled, and working families.

The PNBC gathering in Washington began with a Prayer and Unity Service for PNBC churches, constituents and members of Congress on April 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the host congregation, Alfred Street Baptist Church, 301 South Alfred Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. PNBC speakers included Dr. Perkins who is also Senior Pastor, Greater Christ Baptist Church, Detroit, MI; Dr. Raphael Warnock, Senior Pastor, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA; Dr. Howard-John Wesley, Senior Pastor, Alfred Street Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA; Dr. Frederick Haynes, Senior Pastor, Friendship West Baptist Church, Dallas, TX.

On Tuesday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m., a press conference was held at House Triangle on Capitol Hill.
