The newest addition to the staff of the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC) is Dr. Albert Wayne Johnson who assumed the honored post as PNBC’s General Secretary on September 1, 2019. Hailing from the “green city” of Oakland, California in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Johnson comes with a unique blend of academic achievement, leadership skills, business acumen, and cultural sensitivity. With forty-two years in ministry, thirty-seven of which were serving as senior pastor, Dr. Johnson possess experience in executive leadership and administration in the areas of convention planning and the development of strategic partnerships with religious leaders, community groups, business executives and ecumenical organizations in the United States and around the world. For eight years, Dr. Johnson labored as the Undersecretary/General Secretary of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America (NMBCA), headquartered in Dallas, Texas. From his experience in servant leadership to NMBCA, Dr. Johnson is prepared to lend his skills and expertise in convention planning, operations management, fiscal oversight, and contract negotiation to this historic Convention.
An effective Christian leader never ceases to grow spiritually and professionally. So, has been the case for Dr. Johnson. Recently, he reached the pinnacle of his academic pursuits, earning the Doctor of Ministry degree in Executive Leadership at San Francisco Theological Seminary. He also matriculated at Bishop College of Texas, later transferring to the International Seminary of Florida, where he earned both the Bachelors in Biblical Studies (2006) and the Master of Arts in Biblical Studies (2009); he earned the Master of Divinity equivalent (2012) from the American Baptist Seminary in California, as well. Though formally trained, Dr. Johnson remains humble and attributes his success and passion for ministry to an unshakable faith and the teachings of his early mentors. It was their inspiration and the Holy Spirit’s leading that led him to a career in leadership, specifically, leadership within the Christian church.
Dr. Johnson was licensed to the Gospel Ministry in July of 1977 at the Evergreen Baptist Church of Oakland, California and ordained there in December of 1982. His journey to the pastorate began at the People’s Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, which was also the site of the organizational meeting of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America in 1988. Since 1982, Dr. Johnson has pastored the True Light Missionary Baptist Church, Oakland, California (1982-1988), St. Marks Baptist Church, Pittsburg, California (1988-1992) and, for the past twenty six years, has shepherded the people of the Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church of Portland, Oregon. Dr. Johnson is an eloquent preacher and teacher who travels extensively sharing the Gospel with people of every nation and tongue.
Dr. Johnson’s accomplishments and affiliations have been many and varied. They include: Member of the Board of Directors, Church World Service; Chairman, Evangelical Board of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist District Association; Program Coordination Team Member for the New Baptist Covenant and the Historic Joint African American National Conventions in America; Member, Obama’s Religious Platform Committee and the White House’s Weekly Policy Conference Call; Member, NAACP Steering Committee and At-Large Member, Board of Directors, American Baptists of Oregon.
